The history of NORDIC TRAVEL

Nordic Travel has its roots in the travel agency Smyril Line Iceland. This was first established in oktober 1988, under the name “Norræna Ferðaskrifstofa”. In the beginning, the main goal was to serve as Smyril Line General Agent in Iceland. During the first 14 years the office was located at Laugavegur in the centre of Reykjavík. In November 2001, however, the office at Laugavegur was closed and the operation was moved to Seyðisfjörður, where the ferry arrives to Iceland. In Seyðisfjörður, there was already a harbour agent called Austfar Ltd., which handled all arrangements for the ferry on the spot, and still does.

In March 2003, Smyril Line received a brand new cruise ferry, the new Norröna, a ship aproximately three times as big as the former ferry, boasting modern facilities.

As a part of the marketing development, a separate office was founded again in Reykjavík on 1 January 2004. To begin with, the main emphasis was on selling trips with Norröna to the Icelandic public, but it was clear from the beginning that this office in Reykjavík would also handle all inbound business into Iceland. The incoming department began its work in September of that same year, and is taking care of all land arrangements in Iceland, not only for passengers who come to Iceland with Norröna and have booked through Smyril Line offices, but also for clients who have booked with other partners abroad, and who arrive by air.

The name “Norræna Ferðaskrifstofa” was translated into English, Nordic Travel, and that is how the company became Nordic Travel-Smyril Line. For travel in Iceland, we use just the name Nordic Travel, to keep things simple.

Our main speciality is individual travel. We make arrangements for individual travelers, either with their own car or with a rented car, in different classes of accommodation (good hotels, moderate hotels or guesthouses), including comprehensive route descriptions and hotel descriptions for each separate booking.
Obviously, Nordic Travel also arranges group tours and any other kind of travel in Iceland, including conferences, incentive tours and specialised group tours, but individual travel is our hallmark.
