Deluxe

Deluxe accommodation is usually the best that is available in each area. Mostly, we use hotels for this category, but there are also a few farms, which each have their own atmosphere. In all cases, the accommodation is of a good standard. One hotel can be very small and personal, while another is special because of its wonderful surroundings, and a third one has some extra luxury.

In all accommodations, the rooms have shower and toilet, TV and telephone.

In all the hotels, dinner and drinks are available either in the hotel itself, or else within walking distance (some hotels in the centre of Reykjavík do not have their own restaurant, because there are many restaurants just about next door!). Usually there is a bar, but sometimes the dining room is used for that purpose, or drinks are sold in the reception.

Breakfast is included and is usually a buffet breakfast. People can eat as much as they like, but it is not allowed to take food away from the buffet.

Standard

In standard accommodation, clients can expect all kinds of “hotels”. There are hotels which are open all year round and are nothing but hotels, but there are also boarding schools which have built their boarding houses knowing they would be used as hotels during the summer. Many farms also have gone into tourism and have changed stables into amazingly nice hotel rooms, or have built completely new wings with rooms. Some guesthouses also offer rooms with shower and toilet, and they can be just as nice as a “real” hotel. So the name of the accommodation does not always provide a realistic indication of its quality.

What all hotels have in common, though, is that the rooms you stay in will have a private bathroom with shower and toilet. Only very few hotels have bath tubs. In many of these hotels, there will be TV and telephone in the rooms, but not in all of them. Some have things like hair dryers in the bathroom, and a few also have minibars in the rooms.

Simple

The same goes about simple accommodation: there are all kinds of properties. Many are summerhotels, which means they are boarding schools where it was usually not known that it would be used as a hotel when the school was built. Also, there are various guesthouses which are open all year around, and again there are many farms which offer nice but simple rooms.

In general, these accommodations offer rooms without private facilities. Toilets and showers are in the corridors and are shared by all guests. The number of available showers varies between the guesthouses, so sometimes you might have to wait before it is your turn. It might be a good idea to bring a robe, to wear when you go out of your room for a visit to the bathroom.

In many of these rooms, there is a wash basin, but that is not the case in all guesthouses. In some exceptional cases, there is even a TV or a telephone, but that is not at all common.
