It is also important to realise, that there are mountain roads, which all have numbers that begin with the letter F, which cannot be driven in anything but a good 4-wheel-drive vehicle. There might be rivers that you have to drive through, so you will really need a car that is equipped for that. Fortunately, it is possible to rent such cars, if you want to take one of the highland routes. For programs that do not cross the interior of Iceland, normal cars are sufficient.
