Snowscooter trip on Mýrdalsjökull

Mýrdalsjökull glacier is the southern most, and fourth largest glacier in Iceland, lying on the volcano Katla. In reality Iceland's largest caldera is under the ice (110km2). The average ice thickness is 225 meters and attains maximum thickness in the caldera, 750 meters. The surface area is about 600 square kilometers, yielding a volume of about 130 cubic kilometers. The highest top of the glacier is Goðabunga 1515 meters high and Hábunga 1505 meters high. There are some 20 recorded eruptions in Katla in the past eleven centuries, the last one in 1918 when the jökulhlaup (water flood from melting ice) had an initial discharge of some 100.000-300.000 cubic meters per second.

What to wear: Warm clothes, fleece or wool jumper and good shoes. We provide overalls, gloves and helmets. Snow shoes available.
